Mike Gaffney’s Impassioned VAD Plea

In making the case for voluntary assisted dying (VAD) legislation in Tasmania’s Legislative Council on Tuesday, Independent MLC Mike Gaffney made an impassioned plea to his colleagues to support his bill.

In rounding out his epic 105 minute speech, Mike became emotional as he argued that Tasmanians should have the right to a humane option to end their life if suffering intolerable pain.

We applaud Mike for the determination he has shown in consulting with all segments of the community to draft a bill and bring it before the state parliament for debate.

Mike is a big supporter of secularism. In a Q&A on our Secular Spotlight in July, he said that the decision-making of the state should always remain separate from the influence of the church.

At the National Secular Lobby, we're pleased to have joined forces with a number of pro-secular community organisations in the #DontDivideUs campaign against the proposed Religious Discrimination Bill. Add your voice to the campaign.
